17. FOLLOWING

.
Enthusiastic movement induces following.
This is accomplished by means of adapting

For only in this way will one be securing
joyous consent of those who are following.

But resorting to force, factions, or cunning
arouses resentment which can be obstructing.

Consistency is required in right doing
so that there will be no blame assuming.

In being active one must also allow for resting
so as not to be worn out by mistaken resisting.

17. FOLLOWING: THE LINES
NINE AT THE BOTTOM:
Perseverance brings good fortune.
Going out together produces action.
It's a leader-follower transition
which is implied in the conception
of the following and adaptation
of one who wants to be in command.
Respond to those of lower station
keeping one's own firm position
not drifting in the winds of opinion.
Don't hang only with your "minion".
Mix freely with all of God's creation.

SIX IN SECOND PLACE:
In friendships and close relation
one must make careful discrimination.
In clinging to good & bad companion
one can't, at once, have everyone.

SIX IN THIRD PLACE MEANS:
Depart from inferiors and unprofound,
and in your heart joy will resound,
thus making one's personality sound.
Keep your goals. Don't be turned around.

NINE IN THE FOURTH PLACE:
One gains a following by condescense.
But they are not of honest intents.
Through flattery and subservience
one is seduced into one's own ego trance.
By acquiring 'clarity of presence'
one is able to see through obsequience.

9 IN THE 5TH PLACE:
When I travel on the sea
there is a star to guide me.
If there are things to see...
they cannot divert me.

SIX AT THE TOP:
This refers to an exalted sage
retiring from a turbulent age.
But one follower, one cannot assuage.
So the sage returns and aids
the follower in eternal bondage.
