18. DECAY

Gentle indifference and rigid inertia is at play.
Identify the problems... Prepare a dossier.
Then an incremental Plan-of-Action resume
in stages of 3 (Easier to remember that way).
Deal with the problems... Then take a holiday.
Then ask the oracle again what it has to say.
Since abuse of freedom is the cause of decay
careful consideration must map the new way
in order that the end will bring a new day.

Society corrupted by base attitude & fashion
is like a wind blowing low on a mountain
which is held back and spoils the vegetation.
To do away with this form of corruption
the superior one must first remove stagnation
attaining success by orderly implementation.
Like mountain wind one stirs public opinion.
After strengthening, must placate population.
Corruption flees upon society's regeneration.

18. DECAY: THE LINES
SIX AT THE BOTTOM:
Rigid tradition has resulted in decay.
But decay has not penetrated deeply
and hence it can be remedied easily
as a son who compensates for the decay
that his father let get in the way.
One must not take the matter lightly.
Cognizance of the dangers in every
reform results in things going okay.

NINE IN THE SECOND PLACE:
Work on what is spoiled by the mother.
To errors caused by weakness we refer.
A son must proceed with gentle manner,
in order not to offend and wound her.

NINE IN THE THIRD PLACE:
One proceeds a little too energetically
in righting mistakes in one's history
resulting in minor discords that annoy.
Excess is better than too little energy
leaving one some cause to be sorry.
One remains free of serious complicity.

SIX IN FOURTH PLACE:
Tolerating what is spoiled by the father.
Continuing results in humiliating future.
One is too weak to take proper measure
against decay that has roots in character,
and is just beginning to manifestly occur.
(No blame rests upon the departed father).

SIX IN THE FIFTH PLACE:
One is confronted with corruption
originating from a former neglection.
One lacks power to ward it off alone.
Able helpers help bring reformation.

NINE AT THE TOP MEANS:
Not serving princes, kings or trolls.
(One sets for oneself higher goals).
Some develop heart for other cares,
not laying back with critical stares.
This is justified when we realize,
in ourselves, the call of Paradise.
The sage departs from daily strives,
and imparts meaning to human lives.
