Joyous Lake is represented by the upper trigraph.
Keeping still is represented by the lower trigraph.

The two trigraphs are the opposite each other
yet their different natures enhance each other.

Here dynamics between opposites is represented
where persevering courtesy is initiated.

The Beginning is about Heaven and Earth.
All things that exist owe to them their birth.

This part deals with covenants and courtships:
The foundations of all social relationships.

By means of this example the sage influences
toward universal peace and harmonic advances.

The difference between courtship and seduction
is that one shows persevering consideration.

In mutual attraction and firm correctness...
Marrying a young maiden will lead to success.

Lake on the mountain: The image of influence.
The sage attracts people by ready receptance.

The sage's mind should be humble and be fluid.
People disdain one with a know-it-all attitude.

31. INFLUENCE: THE LINES

SIX AT THE BOTTOM MEANS:
A toe twitch may imply movement
but, as long as intention isn't evident,
it' won't be much of a world event.

SIX IN SECOND PLACE:
Notice the little calves that play.
They will be put to use one day.

NINE IN THE THIRD PLACE:
Every mood of the heart influences motivation.
Such wrongful caprice will lead to humiliation.
One should not immediately yield to every whim.
One must realize the usefullness of inhibition.
This is the basis of the true path to freedom.

9 IN THE 4TH PLACE: Remorse evaporated.
Thru perseverance good fortune's anticipated.
If ones mind is full of anxiety and agitated
(and ones thoughts scattered and dissipated)
one can only effect those closely associated.

Impulses from the heart can be valuable
if one heart remains open and reachable.
The heart must be constant & incorruptable.
If the quiet power of character is employable
the effects produced are correct and desirable.

All shall be receptive to the resonance
of this spirit, succumbing to it's trance.
Do not attempt a manipulating influence.
By practicing such deceptive inducements
one ends up exhausted with little influence.

9 IN 5TH PLACE:  No remorse.
Humpty Dumpty sat on his high horse
and lacked resolve to direct its course.
It jumped a wall with Humpty unhorse
as he hit the ground with great force.
Then all the king's men did discourse:
"The yolk's on him and not the horse".

SIX AT THE TOP MEANS:
Mere tongue wagging will not be of much influence.
