33. RETREAT

The power of Darkness is ascending.
To security...  Light is retreating.

This is a time when unsympathetic forces
make their untimely appearances.

This retreat is not a matter of will
but force of natural law...  Withdrawal.

Retreat is what this reading endorses
in order not to exhaust one's forces.

Retreat, to refuge, is a natural tendency.
Success is achieved if executed properly.

Retreat is not to be confused with rout.
The latter implies, "At all cost... Get out!".

Retreat is a sign of corrective ability.
Flee not when you're still in authority.

It is only then that you can interpret
the signs in time for orderly retreat.

Don't let yourself be reduced to desperation
by abandoning the field to opposition.

This way we can prepare counter movements
and prepare our refuge with improvements.

It's subjective involvement, there's no debate,
if one indulges oneself to ones object of hate.

The superior keeps inferiors a distance,
not with hostility, but, with reticence.

You'll know when God has forgiven you
when you can forgive those who injure you.

33. RETREAT:  THE LINES
.
SIX AT THE BOTTOM MEANS:
One must not try to undertake anything.
When in retreat it is best to be at the beginning.
Here one is in the back with the enemy pursuing.
Playing dead (keeping still) is best way of escaping.

SIX IN THE SECOND PLACE:
Someone is held fast as in a noose
and no one is willing to tear it loose.
The greater one firmly retreats.
The smaller one fervently entreats.
The noble one is bound by duty
to act with strength and beauty.
Thus the line confirms reference:
"In what is small, perseverance."

NINE AT THIRD PLACE:
A halted retreat is nerve wracking and dangerous.
There no longer exits an open course.
In such case it is expedient to put into service,
(in some sense) those who refuse to give one release
so that one may keep the initiative & not be helpless.
This expedient solution is far from progress.
What can one accomplish with such servants?

NINE AT FOURTH PLACE:
Good fortune to the winner
and misfortune to the loser.
In magnanimous retreat the winner
departs... being the wiser.
The only one loosing is the inferior
who looses guidance of the superior.

NINE IN THE FIFTH PLACE:
If the time for retreat is wisely chosen
retreat can be done friendly fashion.

NINE AT THE TOP MEANS:
Inner detachment is an established feat.
Now we are at liberty to "beat feet".
Everyone wins in such cheerful retreat.
